In the time of the Old Kingdom of Remwyre, the Keep was the last bastion of civilization on the Wyld frontier. In the decline of organized civilization in the region, the keep, and the village that grew around it in the Valdronai pass, were lost. This brings us to now. TheIndependent Duchy of Remlakis, a small but vibrant fiefdom loosely allied with the dominant Cleraptis Empire, has laid claim to the area, and wishes to reestablish the Keep and surrounding area to tame the wilderness and add to its mercantile success. You have been lured to the frontier town of Threshold by an offer from the Duke Brexas himself to venture to the Old Keep and see what’s there, and what will be involved with reclaiming it.
The Old Keep is a play-by-post 5e game running in this forum. It’s a world I’m making up, fairly standard, slightly old school, cause I’m old. Basic ideas is the party will start trying to reclaim an ancient Keep, and we’ll branch out from there.Yes, I’m ripping off Keep on the Borderlands and the region is influenced by the BECMI Expert Set’s setting.
I’m looking for 3-6 players with to play 2nd level characters. Point buy or standard array, using 2024 rules, although obviously older subclasses and such can be used if they weren’t redone. I hate the 2024 backgrounds. You are welcome to use them, or do an old style background (even custom) and get unrestricted ability score bonuses. You just have to add an origin feat manually in the character sheet. Fixed hp, milestone leveling, and 100gp on top of starting equipment, which you can sell for full price. Thematically, you are members of your subclass already, just don’t have access to the abilities yet.
As far as deities, there are two major Deities I’d prefer players stick to.Erathis, Lawful Goddess of civilization, and Melora, Chaotic Goddess of Nature. They each have various sects and cults working for them so most domains apply to each, and they accept a lot of alignments among their followers. There is a neutral god Korak who is worshipped by makers, but his direct followers are fairly limited.
Please state your intended subclass.
All 5e races and subclasses are playable in the 2024 rules.
I’m looking for a character clearly on the side of civilization, and also not averse to melee combat. I’ll be choosing quickly.

He/Him. I am the DM, you are the player. You make the mistakes and I decide the consequences. Now, with that being said - Are you SURE you want to cast Fireball?
Race: Werebear Human (I can omit this if you don't want a Werebear PC)
Class: Champion Fighter
Backstory: Pavel was born into the noble family of Von Ursa. His parents were the abjuration spell master Wilhelma and the champion of the realm Guilherme. Raised to protect and fight for those who couldn’t do so themselves, Pavel grew up to be a respectable young man with a strong moral compass (and eventually a doting older brother to his younger sister Fiamma). Under his parent’s knowledgeable training Pavel found he had the capacity for both warfare and wizardry, making quite the formidable fighter indeed. Due to his strong sense of duty and the power gifted to him by his parents, Pavel would often travel down to the villages nearby to patrol nearby forests, take on an odd job here or there, or to simply chat with the common folk. Pavel’s behavior, despite being nobility, earned him the respect of the peasants and the nickname “Brother Bear”. But one night, on a job searching for a lost child by the light of the full moon, Pavel came across a beast unlike anything he’d ever seen before - a bear twice the size he was, with ferocious fangs and wicked sharp claws. Pavel fought bravely, but the bear eventually wore him down, knocking him to his knees. Pavel thought his life was over, but to his surprise the bear laughed (or so he believed, it was tough to figure out whether the series of short growls was a laugh or not) and held out its paw. Cautiously, Pavel took it, and as the light of the full moon began to wane, the bear transformed back into its Dwarven form. The Dwarf introduced himself as Mathan, a traveler who took on odd jobs. He had been searching for the same child Pavel had, when he had found out that the poor girl had been kidnapped by bandits. He had assumed that Pavel was one by accident, but realized that he wasn’t by how he fought. Pavel was enamoured by Mathan’s great strength and asked to be taught by the dwarf, but Mathan told him that his strength came from his beastly curse, not any training. Pavel was not dissuaded however, and asked if he would gain the same strength as a werebear. Mathan warily answered yes, and Pavel asked if Mathan would be willing to test him to see if he was worthy of taking on the curse. When asked why he was willing to do such a thing, Pavel answered that if he became the strongest, he’d be able to protect all, no matter who he fought. Mathan smiled and agreed to pass the curse on, realizing Pavel’s desire for strength came from his love for his friends and family, not out of greed or anything of the sort. The next full moon, the pair met, and the curse was passed on. After the curse was placed on him, Pavel decided that he’d need to get even stronger than before, and decided to go on a journey.

Backstory: Brakka has always been a brash and bold lad. He would be the first suggest to his friends that they play City Watch and Bandits, always insisting he would be the city watch. He delighted in earning his parents' and peers' praise for his imaginary acts of heroism.
When he grew older, he carried that ambition to the frontlines where he fought for the Duchy against its foes. He clombed the ranks and seemed destined for greatness, until one fateful day when he foolishly overextended himself and his team. Some of his team did not make it home and he himself suffered a wound that would relegate him to the sidelines until the end of the battle.
After months of languishing back at his family home, Brekka finally recovered physically, though his pride would nurse its wounds for much longer. He itched to return to his glory days, but Duke Braxas had another duty for him. Brekka was to travel to the frontier and claim the Keep for the Duchy. Determined to make up for old mistakes, Brekka set out immediately.

My game, The Old Keep, needs a player willing to fit in a particular niche. We are just starting out, the original post is in the spoiler.
