Avery recommends "let them come to us, let us be on the attack instead of walking into one of their ambushes."
Xanrym nods and says, "I agree, Avery, but what if they have a way to circle around and come at us from the other passageway?" He gestures toward the north entrance to the current chamber. "Maybe I'll just take a quick peek around the corner."
Xanrym takes out one flask of oil and a bag of caltrops and hands them to Avery and Theldrin. "Here. While I go up to the end of the hall, maybe spread those here so that we can slow them down if they come chasing after me." He indicates a spot in the center of the hallway just as it reaches the doorway (marked by the .x. on this map):
While they start to do that Xanrym takes out a small mirror. He has his crossbow in one hand and the mirror in the other. He leaves his lantern behind in the mud pool room. Xanrym will move slowly and quietly to the end of the hall as indicated on the map. He leans against the north wall near the the corner and carefully pokes the mirror around the corner so that he can see what's up the passageway to the north without having to step around the corner and reveal his presence.
(OOC: In case it matters, I guess I should have also mentioned that Xanrym is still concentrating on Comprehend Languages, probably round 15 of 600 at this point, not that he's likely to keep it running for a full hour.)

Not that you've stumbled into something. Just that you can't quite tell what's happening down the hallway that opens up around the corner to the north. You see that there is some kind of light source, but you'd need to get closer to work out what it is.

Xanrym puts away his mirror and then back to Theldrin that he's going to get a closer look. He moves to the south side of the tunnel so that he's not rounding the turn too close to the corner. Then, facing north with his back against the south side of the tunnel and with his crossbow raised, Xanrym moves sideways -- slowly, carefully -- to the west so that he has a clear view up the north passageway.
Xanrym creeps up the the door without being noticed, he sees a common room with a fireplace and a couple comfortable chairs. While the sun light blocks his view, he does hear three people talking in hushed voices. First Blayze speaks, clearly still winded from her fight in the entrance chamber, “Let’s wait it out here Jarvis, give me some time to recuperate. Have Benn keep an eye on the door, and if they come up the passage we just jump them here. If they end up running into the harpies or the crocs they’re dead meat anyway, we won’t have to deal with them. The trogs will keep them from going down so the lower level, so she won’t be in any danger whatsoever.” Then a deep voice, rough and slow, possibly this Benn person Blayze just mentioned, “Or we go get the others from the dorms up north. Rush them with everything we got, put an end to the bastards right now. They may find their way below and rescue the mayor.” Now another male voice, intelligent and sharp, “Both of you shut up and let me think for a second.” This must certainly be Jarvis, deliberating his options.
Xanrym listens, memorizing what he hears to relay to his companions.
OOC: A few questions for the @drumdigby before I decide what Xanrym does here.
1. How for north of the corner is the door to this other room? Xanrym was headed north up the tunnel, but I'm trying to figure out how far Xanrym is from help if he gets into trouble while hidden at the door.
2. You said "the sun light blocks his view". I thought that we were still underground. Did you mean the light from the fireplace in the room? Or does this room have some sort of window or skylight? Or did you mean that there's some magical light source other than the fireplace?
Hmm, I don't know what I meant by sun light, I must have been thinking of something else when I wrote that part. The partially closed door is what blocks your view

Heh. No problem. That kind of stuff happens when folks are juggling multiple PbP games. Thanks for the clarification and the map.
Theldrin nods in agreement and spreads the caltrops and oil in the spot Xanrym indicated, while keeping an eye on the bard as he scouts ahead.
So, they'd either be at the red .x. in my post, or perhaps Theldrin advanced all the way to the corner so that he could keep an eye on Xanrym as the bard crept along that way.
I know what Xanrym will do next, but I'll wait a bit to post in case Theldrin or any of the others want to post anything for the 2 rounds that it would take for Xanrym to sneak up the northern hallway and listen at the door.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Since Xanrym is hidden, and he knows that Blayze was badly injured, he hopes to surprise the cultists and take out Blayze before they can react. With any luck, he'll get back to the mud room with the other two chasing him right into the party's ambush. He glances back down the hall toward Theldrin, unsure whether there's enough light for the wizard to see him. He gestures with his palm out, hoping that Theldrin stays where he is.
Crossbow in his hands, Xanrym takes a deep breath and gives the door a hard shove with his foot. Standing in the doorway, he scans the room for the three cultists he heard talking. If he spots Blayze, he fires the crossbow at her. (If Blayze is not visible from the door, he'll fire the crossbow at the closest cultist he sees.) As he fires his crossbow, he shouts in an anguished tone, "Vengeance for my fallen friends!" Then he turns and runs south back toward the mud room. He hopes that he tricks them into thinking that the cultists in the first guard room killed one or more of the party members and that he's a lone survivor bent on revenge.
Movement: 30' south, back down the hallway Action: Attack, Crossbow, Light (80/320): 20, Damage: 4 (piercing), rolling the attack with advantage since he was unseen before attacking. Bonus Action: None Free Action: Item interaction - pushing open the door. Talking.
Assuming that from his vantage point, Theldrin would at least see that Xanrym kicked open the door and is now fleeing back towards the rest of the party... he quickly moves ahead and into ambush position in the mud room.

Can you roll a Perception check please Xanrym?
Xanrym Perception 18
(OOC: uh oh! I guess Xanrym is about to stumble into something.
BTW - the original result was 6.)

If he sees no cultists and still can't tell what he's seeing in this light, he'll move about 20' north to see whether that makes anything more clear.
Perception 20 (a second roll in case he has disadvantage from dim lighting: 4)
Concentration: Comprehend Languages

It looks like this. Each square being 10ft

OK. Though I think that Theldrin (and maybe Avery) are currently in the hallway along the south of the map. For example:
So, they'd either be at the red .x. in my post, or perhaps Theldrin advanced all the way to the corner so that he could keep an eye on Xanrym as the bard crept along that way.

Deception 15, if needed, for tricking the cultists.
FYI - In case the tooltips stop working, if the attack shouldn't have been with advantage, then it would be: attack 20 for 6 damage.
And if that should have been Performance, it would be a 13 instead of 15.
